Sabby Jonathan, the current Mayor of Palm Desert, has been involved in shaping Palm Desert for more three decades – as an involved resident and community volunteer, as a member of the City’s Planning Commission for 16 years, and since December 11, 2014, as a member of the Palm Desert City Council.
Sabby currently chairs the Coachella Valley Association of Governments (CVAG) Homelessness Committee. He also serves on CVAG’s Executive Committee, and on the CVAG Public Safety Committee. He represents the Council on the City’s Economic Development Advisory Committee, the Parks & Recreation Committee, and several others, as well as the Boards of the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce and The Living Desert.
A certified public accountant licensed in California since 1981, Sabby’s expertise and interest in taxpayer rights resulted in an appointment by the U.S. Secretary of the Treasury to a three-year-term on the Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Advocacy Panel, where he was elected National Chair.
Closer to home, Sabby helped found the Desert United Soccer Club and played a vital role in the creation of the Palm Desert Soccer Park. He was also one of the founders of the College of the Desert Foundation and was involved in the formation of the California State University – Palm Desert Campus.
In addition to his many years on the Palm Desert Planning Commission, Sabby’s long record of community service includes past service as president of the Palm Desert Chamber of Commerce; president of the Family YMCA of the Desert; president and Co-Founder of College of the Desert Foundation; local campaign chairman for United Way of the Desert; and as a board member of The Living Desert.
Sabby’s outstanding record of service was recognized by the Palm Desert Area Chamber of Commerce in 2011 when it named him as the recipient of the “George Berkey Citizen of the Year” award.
Sabby is the principal of Jonathan & Associates Inc. Certified Public Accountants in Palm Desert. He has a Master’s Degree in Business Administration from the University of Redlands and a Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting from the University of Southern California. Sabby and his wife, Wendy, have made Palm Desert their home since 1979. Their sons, Daniel and Josef, grew up in Palm Desert and graduated from Palm Desert High School. Daniel is now an attorney and Josef owns a real estate development and investment firm.
